A 32-year-old man drowned Sunday while swimming in a rock quarry near the Howard Prairie area, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.

The victim was swimming just before 5:30 p.m. in the quarry located off the Keno Access Road and became entangled in seaweed after jumping off some low rocks near the water's edge, said Sheriff Mike Winters.

He was not wearing a flotation device at the time, Winters said.

"Most people don't wear life jackets when they're swimming in a quarry," Winters said. "But any time people swim in unknown waters they need to be cautious of hazards."

At least a dozen other swimmers were at the quarry at the time, and one of them called 9-1-1.

Jackson County Search and Rescue crews were called to the scene at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Three divers recovered the victim's body at 7:53 p.m.
