A Fall River man fell to his death early Sunday morning at an abandoned rock quarry in the Freetown state forest.
Freetown police reported that two couples had gone to visit the quarry, known locally as "the ledge," late Saturday night.
It had been raining earlier in the evening and the 34 year-old victim apparently lost his footing on the slick rock surface at the quarry's rim and plunged approximately 80 feet to the bottom, police said.
His companions spent several minutes calling his name while frantically trying to locate him in the darkness. At 1:52 a.m. Freetown emergency personnel received a call summoning help.
When the victim was located, he was found to have died from injuries sustained in the fall.
A preliminary report from the Bristol County District Attorney's Office concluded that the fall was accidental.
