January 1, 2006

A 47-year-old Clover, S.C., man died in a scuba diving accident Jan. 1. Jackie Withers Smith drowned at the Lake Norman Rock Quarry. Smith was found by fellow members of the Piedmont Diving and Rescue Association shortly before 3 p.m. He was unconscious when discovered by other divers and died that evening at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. The diving group rents the rock quarry for practice. Friends said Smith had 20 years' experience as a diver. (Source: Charlotte Observer)
