August 26, 2006

A Knott Co., Ky. man died when he drove an all-terrain vehicle over a 17-foot wall at the Big Branch surface coal mine in Magoffin County. The crash occurred shortly after 7 p.m. as Jamie Triplett, 33, of Mousie, along with his friend, Scott Morton, illegally entered mine property on their recreational vehicles. Morton was seriously injured in the accident. The mine was idle at the time, and the only mine employee on the property was a security guard, who discovered the victims. (Source: MSHA)
