Accidents that could have resulted in a fatality, but did not.

08/16/2008
A crew of Quincy firefighters were called way from the fatal accident at the Fore River shipyard Thursday afternoon to rescue an 18-year-old man in a quarry.

The victim hurt his shoulder when he jumped into Berry’s Quarry off Ricciuti Drive in West Quincy at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday. A friend called for help when it became clear he couldn’t climb the 30 to 40 feet of rock to get out or swim to the other side of the quarry where he could have walked out, Fire Lt. Steven Infascelli said.

The Quincy crew had been at the shipyard in Quincy Point, one of several that responded to the collapse at about 12:30 p.m. of a 160-foot section of the Goliath crane.

When they arrived at the quarry Thursday afternoon, firefighter Chris Murphy jumped in the water, swam out to stranded man and put a life ring around him. Firefighters used ropes to pull him to safety, Infascelli said.

“Given the fact that the firefighters had just returned from the shipyard tragedy and had been under extreme circumstances all afternoon, their response in the quarry emergency was commendable,” Deputy Fire Chief Gary Smyth said.

The 18 year-old man was treated and released from Quincy Medical Center Thursday night.
