COAL MINE FATALITY - On July 15, 1997, one cut had been taken from the face and the continuous mining machine was backed out into the open crosscut. Four miners were near the continuous mining machine when a large horseback fell, starting at the face and continuing outby to the location of the miners. Three of miners were injured and the foreman was killed.

This is the 18th coal mine fatality in 1997. As of July 15 of last year there had been 19 fatalities. This death is the sixth classified as ROOF FALL in 1997.
